Encyclopedia - Aerocopter AK1‐3

Multi‐purpose two‐seater light helicopter the Aerocopter AK1‐3 was designed by DB "Aerocopter" (Ukraine) in cooperation with ASTC Antonov, OJSC Motor‐Sich and the Kharkov Aviation Institute. DB Aerocopter was founded in 1999 and the development, manufacture and maintenance specifications for the AK1-3 was completed in the 12 years following.

The AK1‐3 is configured with a single main rotor and tail rotor, both sets made from composite materials. The cabin has width 1200 mm at shoulder level and provides sufficient room for pilot and one passenger. Hot molded polycarbonates are used in the cabin design to ensure wide visibility and comfort. The cabin is equipped with heating and ventilation systems for defogging. Dual cyclic controls provide the ultimate feel and control.

The Main Rotor consists of three blades that are made of composite materials. They can be easily attached and removed for transport with trailer or storage.

The AK 1-3 power-plant is a 165 hp, fuel injected, Subaru EJ-25 derated at 156 hp. It is liquid cooled and was chosen for its reliability and excellent power to weight ratio. It uses premium (95) fuel. Power from the engine is transmitted through a belt drive with overrunning clutch to the shaft of the main reducer. Minimal engine coverings make it easy to do a pre-flight check, and fluid levels are clearly visible through site glass.
