Encyclopedia - Aerospatiale Alouette III

The Alouette III is basically an enhanced version of the Alouette II, with more powerful engine, increased performance, improved equipment and larger cabin capacity. The prototype first flew on 28 February 1959, with the first production aircraft following with the designation SA 316A. The SA 316A was built for local and international markets and in June 1962 an agreement was reached for license production in India. The first Indian assembled Alouette III was flown on 11 June 1965.

The SA 316B, which first flew on 27 June 1968, had strengthened main- and tail rotor transmissions and could carry more payload. It became the main production version and the first aircraft were delivered in 1970.

The Alouette III’s cabin is larger and more enclosed than its predecessor, and can carry seven people. All passenger seats are removable to create cargo space. The external sling can carry loads of up to 750kg (1,653lb). The Alouette III can also be used in the CASEVAC (casualty evacuation) role, carrying two stretchers and two seated medics behind the pilot.

By 1984 more than 1450 Alouette III’s were produced, and has been used in more than 90 countries.

In India the Alouette is names the Cheetah
